BOOTPAST.EXE modifies floppy diskettes so that they will boot
trough to the hard disk.
UNLIKE DOS BOOTABLE DISKS, THERE IS NO NEED FOR
AN OPERATING SYSTEM TO BE ON THE DISKETTE. YOU DO
NEED A HARD DISK TO BE ABLE TO BOOT FROM THE DISKETTES
TREATED.
USE THIS PROGRAM ON ALL DISKETTES LEAVING YOU OR YOUR
ORGANISATION AND TREAT YOUR DISKETTES WHICH YOU USE
IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE cALMER LAZYBACK BACKUP PROGRAM.
Having been given Bill Gibson's BT.COM and asked
to see if it can be modified to work on all disk
types, I have rewritten in from scratch. Thanks
to Bill for providing a good idea and shell to
work with.
Bootpast is modelled on:
BootThru - The Diskette Modifier
Version 1.05 - Bill Gibson 1987
Bootpast changes the boot sector on floppy disk
to automatically boot of your hard disk. It will
find your hard disk (normally drive C) and boot
from that if you boot your computer and happen
to have left the floppy in drive A. (This
avoids the problem of having to disengage the
floppy and hit a key).
BootPast usage:
Bootpast <Enter>
will modify bootsector of disk in DRIVE A, then
return to DOS.
Bootpast /many<Enter>
will modify bootsector of disk in DRIVE A, then
ask for a key press and modify the next disk in A.
Bootpast b<Enter>
will modify bootsector of disk in DRIVE B, then
return to DOS.
Bootpast b /many<Enter>
will modify bootsector of disk in DRIVE B, then
ask for a key press and modify the next disk in B.
Bootpast b /edit<Enter> (registered version only)
will modify bootsector of disk in DRIVE B after
giving you a chance to change the header message.
Bootpast /edit<Enter> or (registered version only)
Bootpast a /edit<Enter> (registered version only)
will modify bootsector of disk in DRIVE A after
giving you a chance to change the header message.
Oops: If you "accidentally" bootpast a bootable systems disk,
which really means that you were not taking any notice of
bootpast's warning message, you can restore the original
bootsector with the DOS "SYS A:" command. But then again,
it may not work, depending on the amount of room you have
on the floppy. Moral of the story: Heed the warnings....
SETTING YOUR OWN MESSAGES ON FLOPPY BOOT SECTORS:
Registered Users Option:
First time you run Bootpast, a screen-editor appears to allow
you to customise the message which will be displayed when you
boot from the treated disk.
To re-edit the message, key in "Bootpast /edit"
BootPast. The registered version now allows you to
edit the message without the need of the message file.
First time you run it, the editor will appear on screen.
You can now test the message on the floppy without the
need to re-boot: Simply run bootpast again, the message
will be shown on screen. You then have the choice to
over-write the header or leave as is. This only works
with disks treated with Bootpast Version 2.00 or higher.
FLOPPY WON'T BOOT:
If a disks treated with Bootpast does not boot on your
system, you have not done anything wrong and there is
nothing you can do to get the disks to boot other than
upgrading the BIOS of your PC. Generally speaking though,
if your computer is one of the problem computers, you'll most
likely find that there are other incompatabilities there and
it is probably not worth your while to spend money on out-of-date
technology....
